Faith, known as **Iman** in Arabic, is the foundation of Islam. It is the sincere belief in Allah (SWT), the Creator and Sustainer of everything, and the acceptance of His guidance for humanity. Iman is more than simply saying that we believe; it involves conviction in the heart, affirmation through words, and a commitment to living according to the teachings of Islam.
Faith gives meaning and direction to a Muslim’s life. It reminds us that we were created to worship Allah alone, recognize His blessings, follow His guidance, and strive to live with honesty, compassion, justice, patience, and good character.
The first and most fundamental pillar of Islam is the **Shahadah**, the declaration of faith:
**“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.”**
**Meaning in English:**
“I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
The Shahadah is the foundation upon which a Muslim’s beliefs and way of life are built. It expresses two essential truths: that Allah alone deserves our worship and that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger through whom Allah conveyed His final revelation and guidance to humanity.
The first part of the Shahadah affirms **Tawheed**, the absolute oneness of Allah. Muslims believe that Allah is the one and only Creator, Lord, and Sustainer of the universe. He has no partner, no equal, and no one shares in His divinity.
Worship belongs to Allah alone. Muslims turn to Him in prayer, seek His guidance, place their trust in Him, ask for His mercy, and express gratitude for His blessings.
Belief in Tawheed teaches us to depend upon Allah while making sincere efforts in our daily lives. It encourages humility, gratitude, patience during hardship, and responsibility for our words and actions.
The second part of the Shahadah affirms that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah and the final prophet. Muslims believe that he conveyed Allah’s message faithfully and taught humanity how to worship Allah and live according to His guidance.
His life provides an example of faith, honesty, mercy, patience, forgiveness, justice, and compassion. By following the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Muslims seek to strengthen their relationship with Allah and improve their conduct toward others.
Islamic faith includes belief in six fundamental matters:
1. **Belief in Allah:** To believe in the one and only God, who created and sustains everything.
2. **Belief in the Angels:** To believe in the angels created by Allah, who fulfill the duties He assigns to them.
3. **Belief in the Revealed Books:** To believe in the original revelations sent by Allah, including the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Holy Qur’an, which Muslims believe is Allah’s final revelation.
4. **Belief in the Messengers:** To believe in the prophets and messengers sent by Allah, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), with Muhammad being the final prophet.
5. **Belief in the Day of Judgment:** To believe that every person will be resurrected and held accountable for their beliefs and deeds, according to Allah’s perfect justice and mercy.
6. **Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar):** To believe that Allah has complete knowledge and wisdom and that everything occurs within His decree, while human beings remain responsible for their choices and actions.
These six articles provide the foundation for a Muslim’s understanding of Allah, life, responsibility, and the Hereafter.
The Qur’an teaches that human beings were created to worship Allah. Allah says:
Wa mā khalaqtul-jinna wal-insa illā liyaʿbudūn.
**“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”**
— *The Holy Qur’an, 51:56*
Worship in Islam includes the formal acts of worship, such as Salah (prayer), fasting, Zakah (charity), and Hajj (pilgrimage), when required. It also includes everyday actions performed sincerely and in ways that please Allah.
Treating parents with kindness, caring for one’s family, earning a lawful living, helping a neighbor, speaking truthfully, supporting people in need, and fulfilling our responsibilities can all be acts of worship when done with the right intention and in accordance with Islamic teachings.
Islam therefore encourages Muslims to bring faith into every part of life—not only inside the mosque, but also at home, at work, in school, and throughout the wider community.
Faith grows through sincere worship, learning, reflection, and good deeds. Muslims are encouraged to strengthen their Iman by:
– Performing the five daily prayers and remembering Allah regularly.
– Reading, understanding, and applying the teachings of the Holy Qur’an.
– Following the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
– Giving charity and helping those who are struggling.
– Speaking honestly, keeping promises, and treating others with respect.
– Seeking forgiveness from Allah and sincerely trying to correct mistakes.
– Practicing patience during difficulties and gratitude during times of ease.
– Learning about Islam and teaching its values to children and future generations.
No person is perfect, and every human being makes mistakes. Islam encourages sincere repentance, continued effort, and hope in Allah’s mercy.
True faith should influence how we treat Allah’s creation. A Muslim strives to be trustworthy, fair, compassionate, humble, and respectful. Faith encourages us to avoid injustice, dishonesty, arrogance, and harm to others.
A strong connection with Allah can bring spiritual comfort, guide our decisions, and remind us of our responsibilities toward our families, neighbors, and society. By practicing Islam with sincerity and good character, we can help build a community rooted in faith, knowledge, mercy, and mutual respect.
At **Stroudsburg Islamic Center**, we welcome individuals and families who wish to learn about Islam, deepen their understanding of faith, and strengthen their connection with Allah.
