What Is Islam?

Islam is a monotheistic religion that teaches the worship of one God, Allah (SWT), and living a life of faith, righteousness, compassion, justice, and peace.

The word Islam comes from an Arabic root associated with submission and peace. A Muslim is a person who submits to Allah and seeks to live according to His guidance.

The Core Beliefs of Islam

Muslims believe in:

  • One God (Allah) — the Creator and Sustainer of everything.
  • The Angels — servants of Allah who carry out His commands.
  • The Books of Allah — including the Qur’an, which Muslims believe is the final revealed word of Allah.
  • The Prophets — including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
  • The Day of Judgment — when every person will be accountable for their deeds.
  • Divine Decree (Qadar) — that everything occurs by Allah’s knowledge and wisdom.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five fundamental acts of worship:

  1. Shahadah — declaring that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.
  2. Salah — performing the five daily prayers.
  3. Zakat — giving obligatory charity to those who are eligible.
  4. Sawm — fasting during the month of Ramadan.
  5. Hajj — making the pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able.

Islam Teaches Good Character

Islam encourages Muslims to be honest, trustworthy, kind to parents and neighbors, helpful to those in need, forgiving, just, and compassionate. It teaches that worship is not limited to prayer; sincere good deeds and helping others are also important.

The Qur’an says:

“Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and generosity to relatives…”
— Qur’an 16:90

Islam Is a Way of Life

Islam provides guidance for a person’s relationship with Allah, family, neighbors, community, and all of creation. It encourages people to seek knowledge, care for others, avoid injustice, and strive for righteousness.

Islam is a faith of worship, guidance, mercy, and responsibility — calling people to know and worship their Creator and live a life of purpose and goodness.
