Shahadah — The Declaration of Faith
The Shahadah is the first and most important pillar of Islam. It is the declaration that a person believes in and accepts the fundamental message of Islam.
Arabic:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Transliteration:
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illallāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlullāh.
Meaning:
“I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
What does it mean?
“There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah” means that Muslims believe Allah alone is the Creator and the only One who deserves worship. Muslims do not worship anyone or anything besides Allah.
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” means Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was chosen by Allah as His final messenger. Muslims follow his teachings and example, known as the Sunnah, and believe that he conveyed Allah’s final revelation, the Qur’an.
The Shahadah is therefore not simply words to recite—it represents faith, belief, and commitment to worship Allah and follow His guidance.
